Day 17 - Bora Bora, French Polynesia

We woke up in time to watch the sail in through the reef into the Lagoon on Bora Bora.  It is another beautiful South Pacific day.  We decided we would rent a car and drive around the Island ourselves; however, it is Sunday and Avis was closed.  It turned out to be a good thing!  We got a taxi-van with Tom and Martha with a great driver, Dino.  We spent about two hours going around the 20 mile drive.

We had never been completely around this island, so it was nice to see the other side.  We stopped at the Softil Hotel for a drink.  It is low season here now and the hotels are only about 30% full.  There used to be 14 hotels but now there are only 10.  The economy has really taken a toll here.  Dino was born on the island but spent several years in California.

He made the joke that there were a lot of blue eyed Polynesians because the U.S. Navy was at war only with the local women.   He said he was wearing tinted contact lenses to make his eyes brown…I never could figure out whether he was kidding or not.

Dinner in Compass Rose was excellent this evening.  Jan had Wild Boar Stew with Mushroom Sauce and Fred had the Steak Diane.  Ronald gave us great service as usual and Laura kept our wine glasses full.   We didn’t go to the show which turned out to be a mistake because everyone who did go said it was very good.  It was a magician.
